Process for Determining Award

Decisions on awards will be made by a Law Center Emergency Grant Committee appointed by the Dean. Emergency grants from the fund will be made on a timely basis once approval has been recommended by the Committee. The Committee will seek clarification of applicants, as necessary. The awards will be made through the LSU Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.

Note:  Students cannot obtain funds from both LSU’s Student Emergency Support Fund and this fund at the same time.

Please note that if the applicant has already borrowed the maximum allowable financial aid, as determined by the LSU Financial Aid Office, a grant from this fund may lower the amount a student may borrow in the future if the applicant’s Cost of Attendance is not able to be adjusted.

It is important for each student to contact the LSU Financial Aid office to verify status and impact on existing and future educational loans before accepting this grant.

Important Note for Spring 2020 Recipients: March 5, 2020 Electronic Announcement from the U.S. Department of Education indicates that financial aid offices may exercise professional judgment (PJ) in adjusting a student’s Cost of Attendance if awarded funds from the Student Emergency Relief Fund. The LSU Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships has indicated that it is already aware of the DoE announcement and prepared to exercise professional judgment on a case-by-case basis depending on documented evidence provided to that office by each student applicant.
