Women in Leadership Symposium at LSU Law
March 29, 2018LSU Law will host Women in Leadership Symposium — sponsored by LSU Office of Academic Affairs, University Council on Gender Equity, Law Center Committee on Diversity and Professionalism — on April 3 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Law Center McKernan Auditorium (located near the Old Law Building main entrance facing Highland Rd./LSU Parade Grounds). Barrister's Bowl raises more than $13,000 for Geaux Teal
March 28, 2018LSU Law students and organizers of the annual Barrister’s Bowl charity football game and auction presented a check to Geaux Teal on March 26 on the steps of the LSU Law Center. Students raised more than $13,000 for the ovarian cancer organization during the football game and auction on Feb. 24. Barrister’s Bowl pits students in a full-tackle football game with a student-cheerleading squad performing pre-game and halftime routines for the fans. After the passing of vice chancellor, dean, longtime professor, and Barrister’s Bowl’s biggest fan Cheney Joseph to cancer in 2015, Barrister’s Bowl organizers decided to donate proceeds from…

LSU Law wins third National Admiralty Moot Court Championship in four years
March 26, 2018LSU Law’s team of Jessie Finley, Sara Kuebel, and Jacob Cunningham won the 2018 John R. Brown National Admiralty Law Moot Court Competition in Seattle on March 24. The national-championship-winning team also won the competition's Maritime Law Association of the United States Award for the Best Brief. Travel to this year’s competition was underwritten by a grant from the Houston Marine and Energy Insurance Conference. With wins in 2015 and 2016, LSU Law has won three of the last four national championships at the Admiralty competition. LSU Law advanced to the semifinal round of the competition in 2017. LSU Law wins Space Law Moot Court North American regionals, advances to world competition in Germany
March 26, 2018LSU Law students Zach Miller and Max Roberts were crowned champions of the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition’s North American regional rounds in Washington, D.C., on March 24. Participating for the first time in the competition, the team also took home the award for Best New Team. The LSU Law team advances to the World Championships of the Space Law Court Competition, which will be held in October 2018 in Bremen, Germany. March 26, 2018Two mock trial teams from the LSU Law Center won first place in a pair of national competitions on March 24. LSBA’s LIFT Incubator Program seeks two new attorneys interested in establishing solo practices in Lake Charles
March 21, 2018The LSBA Access to Justice Department is accepting applications for the LIFT Incubator Project at the Southwest Louisiana Law Center (Law Center). Legal Innovators for Tomorrow (LIFT) is a legal incubator program designed to address the legal needs of the underserved and underrepresented by supporting new lawyers build viable and sustainable public interest-focused solo law firms. LSU Law Center moves up 8 spots in 2019 U.S. News and World Report rankings of law schools
March 20, 2018The LSU Law Center moved up eight spots to No. 88 in the latest law school rankings released March 20 by “U.S. News and World Report.” The Law Center remained in the top 100 law schools in the nation in the closely watched rankings, moving up from No. 96 in the previous year. More than 200 accredited public and private law schools are reviewed by the magazine. LSU Law is one of 52 public law schools in the country to be ranked in the top 100. March 19, 2018LSU Law students Erin Abrams and Justin DiCharia won the Spring 2018 Ira S. Flory Mock Trial Competition on March 6. Chaz Coleman and Leah Voth finished runners-up in the internal trial competition. Abrams and DiCharia represented the plaintiff against the defense team of Coleman and Voth. LSU Law to present talk by former U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu
March 17, 2018LSU Law’s Scholars for Environment and Energy Development will present a talk by former United States Senator Mary Landrieu at 12:40 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, in the McKernan Auditorium. A three-time senator from Louisiana from 1996-2014, Landrieu will discuss her work following her tenure on Capitol Hill. She especially will focus on her work with Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority, as well as her take on the future of the state and its coastal needs. LSU Law welcomes new faculty for Fall 2018 semester
March 12, 2018The Paul M. Hebert Law Center will welcome four new faculty members starting in the Fall 2018 semesters — Lisa Avalos, Nicholas Bryner, Lécia Vicente, and Madalyn Wasilczuk. Avalos previously served as Assistant Professor of Law at Arkansas. She earned her J.D. from New York University School of Law. She also holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in sociology from Northwestern University, and a B.A. in psychology from Northwestern University. Avalos's research focuses on international human rights with an emphasis on women's human rights, gender-based violence, and sexual violence. LSU Law remembers longtime librarian Kate Wallach on International Women’s Day
March 8, 2018On International Women’s Day, we honor and remember Kate Wallach — a powerhouse librarian and legal scholar whose time at LSU Law transformed the library and impacted many of our students’ lives. Dr. Wallach was a German refugee, and her admittance to practice law in Berlin in 1933 was reported as “a rare accomplishment at that time for a woman” and that she was a “model of excellence to the students she taught” by her school newspaper at the University of Cologne.
