LSU Law’s faculty have been subpoenaed to appear as defense counsel in the 2019 Cheney Joseph Memorial Students vs. Faculty Charity Mock Trial on March 28. The trial will be held in the McKernan Auditorium from 6 to 8 p.m.

The Board of Advocates is hosting the mock trial in honor of the late LSU Law professor, Cheney Joseph.

Joseph taught at the Law Center from 1972 until his passing in 2015. In that time, he was recognized as a Distinguished Professor of Law, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, and even served as Interim Co-Dean.

Cheney Joseph was known for his acute knowledge of criminal law, criminal procedure, and evidence. In homage to his work, the mock trial will handle a criminal case: State of Louisiana v. Conrad Grayson.

For the purposes of the trial, the participating faculty will serve as the defense. Students, selected by the BOA Executive Board from the pool of Board of Advocates members, will serve as the prosecutors.

“We expect your appearance, and wish you no luck whatsoever in your preparations,” said the subpoena, issued by Board of Advocates President Sohil Sharedalal, to the LSU Law faculty.

The event is spearheaded by 3L student, Kaylyn Blosser, the 2018-2019 Director of Board of Advocates.

Being an avid competitor, Blosser has participated in 2018 Fall Flory, 2018 Tullis Competition, multiple external competitions, and, most recently, a competition put on by the American Bar Association in Washington D.C.

Blosser felt convicted to create more courtroom opportunities, and sought out to establish another competition where students could practice their skills.

In association with the Board of Advocates, Blosser worked with the LSU Law Association to bring back the spring mock trial, which was held only once before. This year, it was decided to dedicate the trial to Cheney Joseph’s legacy.

The trial is open to the public and all proceeds will go toward LSU Law’s general scholarship fund. There will be an entrance fee and a raffle opportunity to win a seat in the jury.

Come enjoy an exciting mock trial while supporting a worthwhile cause.
