The Carl H. Hanchey Memorial Annual Scholarship was established by Mr. Hanchey's family in his memory and for his for his contributions to the legal community. Mr. Hanchey graduated from L.S.U. Law School in 1965. He clerked for the Louisiana Third Circuit Court of Appeal from 1965-1966. For the next forty-three years, he engaged in private practice in Lake Charles. First, he was a partner for over 30 years with the Jones Tete firm, and then he practiced of counsel with his son at the Hanchey Law Firm until shortly before his death on August 16, 2009. Carl Hanchey was very active in the legal and civic communities. He served as an officer in the Southwest Louisiana Bar Association, on the ethics and judicial review committees of the Louisiana State Bar Association, and as a bar examiner for many years. He was named “Best Lawyer” by the Times in Lake Charles. He served as president of the Kiwanis Club of Lake Charles, as president of the Administrative Board of the First United Methodist Church, on the Board of Directors of Premier Bank and on the Lake Charles Symphony Board. Despite these accomplishments, he was best known for his humility, honesty, integrity, compassion and love for his family and friends. He was a true servant to all who were fortunate enough to know him, always putting others’ needs ahead of his own. The recipient of this scholarship will be chosen by the Law Center Scholarship Committee based on merit and academic performance. The student may retain this scholarship for additional years if the continue to meet the scholarship requirements.
