"There are students here from all different walks of life and that enhances the learning experience. Being exposed to a variety of different perspectives breathes life into the law in ways that I would never have imagined."

Ashley Mayes

Class of 2011

LSU Law Student

Background: Earned a bachelor’s degree in management and legal studies in business from Tulane University; worked as an assistant buyer for Foley’s and Macy’s department stores for three years; 1L Class Representative in the LSU Chapter of Black Law Students Association; member of the Chancellor’s Student Advisory Board; Ernest N. Morial Scholar; working on getting LSU Law involved in the “Cold Case Justice Initiative.”

Why Law School: My ultimate career goal is to become a well-rounded businesswoman and I feel that having a good grasp of the law is an integral component to that goal.

Why LSU Law: The state of Louisiana has this inexplicable pull on me! There is honestly no place on earth like this state. Ever since I moved away in 2005, I’ve been trying to find a way back. I confined my school search to this state. LSU Law’s bar passage rate automatically placed it on the top of my list and an enjoyable campus visit kept it there. Additionally, I love Baton Rouge’s laid back and familial vibe.

The Faculty: There is such a broad spectrum of personalities reflected in our faculty. I enjoy them all, from Professor Joseph Bockrath’s sometimes bitter and sardonic wit to Professor Paul Baier’s inspirational and passionate oratorical style. I value being exposed to such different minds because there are certain “quirks” that we pick up from each of them that will help mold us into great attorneys. But what they all have in common is that they are brilliant, helpful, and they genuinely want to give us the tools necessary to become awesome at whatever we choose to do.

The Curriculum: The curriculum is indeed challenging. I think that the skills we acquire while working with the Civil Law are especially helpful. The methods of reasoning and interpretive skills necessary to understand the civilian body of law are very useful in other courses.

Future Goals: While it is likely that my plans will change, my current goal is to work in criminal law for a while and then to eventually get into politics. The past two years have really ignited within me a newfound passion for politics.

Just for Fun: After living far away from my family for almost three years, I’m now able to see my family in Texas and Louisiana more often. Most of my free time is spent with my family. I also enjoy partaking in Louisiana cuisine. I like to find little hole-in-the-wall establishments on my quest for the best food in town. You find some of the greatest food in the most unsuspecting places.
