Dean Sutherland, Class of 1975

Favorite LSU Law memories, professors, activities

Marrying Roz following my 1L year was the highlight of my time as an LSU Law student and of my life since then. Good thing she has a sense of humor.

After taking admiralty law from visiting professor David W. Robertson and maritime personal injury law from Judge Alvin Rubin, I knew the area of law in which I wanted to practice.

During my 2L year, I accepted an offer to clerk for Associate Justice Albert Tate, Jr. of the Supreme Court of Louisiana after graduation. This allowed me to fully enjoy the rest of my legal education.

Life's highlights since graduation

I thank LSU Law for allowing me to serve as an adjunct professor, to coach the LSU Law admiralty moot court teams and to help organize and teach in the LSU Law Trial Advocacy Program. The friendships I made during these activities continue to enrich my life.

I appreciate the opportunity to be a co-author with Professor Frank Maraist, Interim LSU President (and LSU Law Dean) Tom Galligan and Catherine Maraist on the Third Edition of Cases and Materials on Maritime Law and on the 7th Edition of Admiralty in a Nutshell.

I prize the personal and professional relationships with the lawyers with whom I have worked, opposing counsel and the judges before whom I practiced and with whom I have taught.

Receiving the LSU Law 2015 Distinguished Achievement Award is a highlight of my life.

I enjoyed my 40+ year membership in the Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel, where I was an organizer and teacher in the LADC Trial Academy. I currently serve as the 2020-2021 LADC President.

If I had to do it all over again...

I may have accepted the job offer I referred to my dear friend, Ed Walters, Jr.

Louis Phillips, Class of 1980

Special message to your fellow classmates

Hope all are well, for being so old.

Favorite LSU Law memories, professors, activities

Professor Pascal telling me, after last semester exams (which I had to pass with no room for error), "Mr. Phillips, I don't know whether to give you an A+ or an F." Me (bad student) coming in second to Gordon Whitman (great student) in Paul Baier's Constitutional Law quiz bowl. Finally, the fact that Law School ended the day it did (as if it had lasted one more day I would not have made it).

Life's highlights since graduation

Family (wife and two kids); seeing some of the world; meeting lawyers and judges from all over as a result of bankruptcy practice and judgeship.

If I had to do it all over again …

Probably would have studied more than 10 days for bar exam - was truly stressful.

Special message to your fellow classmates

Best wishes from a proper distance.

Brilliant classmates

Life's highlights since graduation

Solo commercial practice in downtown New Orleans, sharing offices with nice people. Nevertheless, keeping things simple sometimes gets complicated. My favorite lawyer quote was attributed to a long time senior member of the New Orleans bar: "I can't retire yet, my kids are not even 50." Seriously, Katie and I are lucky to have three children, two in-laws and one grandchild, all with their own cell phone accounts and living close by.

If I had to do it all over again …

In the mid-'90s, our 12 year old daughter received a gift from her grandparents and I took her to our stockbroker to select her investments. She chose Starbucks and Apple. Both the stockbroker and I still are kicking ourselves for not listening to her.

T. Randolph Richardson, Class of 1980

Name and recipe for your Tigers/Gamecocks-inspired cocktail

Something strong to kill any COVID.

Favorite LSU Law memories, professors, activities

Prof Baier as I started school with Contracts. Many other great teachers: thank you so much. Graduation, of course. And passing the Bar Exam. Never took another, thank you.

Life's highlights since graduation

I have been practicing law in New Orleans since graduation. Self employed in an office with John Munoz (LSU 1975) since 1984. Still working. I have been married since 2000 to Lisa Gourgues from NOLA. Lots of travel with Lisa, including Sicily before Covid. Lisa's grandfather was born in Sicily and came to NO at age 11. Also, I have been a High School Football official for 29 years. Working a game Friday so I will miss you then.

If I had to do it all over again …

I would not change a thing. Thanks for everything, LSU Law.

Life's highlights since graduation

After briefly practicing law, I have spent the past 39 years as a tax partner at Postlethwaite and Netterville, where I still practice. For about the past 20 years I have done lots of expert testimony in business valuation and damages.

Have been a volunteer teacher of a daily Law Studies class at Catholic High in BR for the past 38 years. Lots of my former students are now LSU Law grads.

Married with three 20-something sons.

If I had to do it all over again …

Not the career path I thought I would take when I finished law school but it has been a great career. I did not think I would use my law degree to be a witness and a teacher but both are a lot of fun.

I have been married for 21 years and have four children one each in college, high-school, middle school and elementary school. It's a wonderful life!

If I had to do it all over again …

Stress less about what I would do right after law school. At that time, I never would have imagined having all of the experiences and adventures that I have had and the life I would be living right now.

Lynn Fleming, Class of 1995

Favorite LSU Law memories, professors, activities

The summer in Aix-en-Provence is a standout in my memory. I can still remember pain-au-chocolat for breakfast while walking to class and going to Cassis for some sun after class.

Life's highlights since graduation

I retired at the age of 40 in 2010 as the Assistant Director of Central Staff at the La State 5th! One of the best decisions I ever made was to buy time toward retirement while I worked at the court of appeal. I then worked for a few years with fellow classmate Stacy Head at the Nola City Council, where we made a difference in New Orleans. I also owned a beauty business in 2017-2018. in 2018, I changed my marital status and I'm restructuring my life. I renovated my house, traveled, and have spent time with family. I have a fur child who is a Morkie named Buttercup. I haven't figured out what I want to do next, which is a scary and freeing thought all at the same time!

If I had to do it all over again …

I treasure my legal education. LSU Law taught me how to learn anything I've needed to learn. If I could do it all again, I would have been more involved in activities while I was in law school.
