    Other Necessary Books:

Choose ONE Law Dictionary and ONE Federal Rule Book, NOT ALL!

    1.  Law Dictionary your choice - Black's, Bouvier, or Gilbert's (Note: Casebook Plus above includes Gilbert's Dictionary digital edition)  Old, used paperback, or digital versions of a law dictionary are fine. Please pick a convenient format that you will actually use (and carry with you where you study). 2022 Federal Civil Rule Booklet, Legal Pub.com, 9781934852439 (preferred edition) or 2022 federal Civil Rule Booklet, Michigan Legal Pub. 9781640021051.

    2. Recommended/Optional Glannon Guide to Civil Procedure: Learning Civil Procedure Through Multiple-Choice Questions and Analysis, Fourth Edition (2018 - $46.00) ISBN 9781543806151.

There is a copy of the Glannon Book on reserve at the Law Library  It may be useful to review that copy before deciding on whether you want to have your own copy.  Used copies of the current edition are also widely available.  Older versions of both of Glannon's study guides are now out of date and should be avoided!

The use of electronic devices is not permitted during class.

5009-1 Criminal Law [Avalos]
  • Lee & Harris, Criminal Law: Cases and Materials, 2019, 4th, Hardback, 9781683284062, West Academic, (link)
  • The use of electronic devices is not permitted during class. Therefore, do not purchase any electronic-only version of this text.

5009-3 Criminal Law [Diamond]
  • Dressler & Garvey, Criminal Law: Cases and Materials, 2022, 9th, Hardback, 9781636596891, West Academic, (link)
  • The 9th Edition can be purchased directly from West Publishers, locally through the campus bookstore at Barnes & Noble or at Claitor’s Bookstore; or through booksellers available online and otherwise. This edition has a 2022 copyright date, and so there will only be one semester’s worth of the book available in the used book market. This can lower your expenses. Some students choose to lower their costs even further by purchasing an older edition. So it is that the 8th Edition of Dressler & Garvey is available and is cheaper than the current edition, but for any student who chooses that alternative, there is the additional responsibility to seek out the pages that correspond to the 8th Edition assignment. The student’s further responsibility is to be clear on the material in the current edition that is not available in the older edition.

Students should be aware of what West Academic Publishing calls its “casebook plus” option. Through this option, students purchase a digital copy of the 9th Edition in addition to or instead of the print edition, along with digital learning aids.

Students can also buy access to the digital aids separate and apart from the digital copy, something those who choose a used book might wish to do.  You will find these tools highly useful, but with that said, the only one not available through the subscription the law library has to West’s Digital Study Aids is the set of faculty authored self-assessment quizzes that come with the digital book.

Pricing options for those who purchase directly from West are here.

In the past, the publisher has announced the following: “Students can purchase any of our books from our online store, http://store.westacademic.com/ . We do have eBook versions, at a substantial discount, for many of our books. Free shipping is available, and students can get a 15% discount on print books (and after June 1, also on eBooks) if they use this code upon checkout: LSULAW.” One anticipates that that discount will remain in place.

5009-2 Criminal Law [Levy]
  • Kadish, Schulhofer, & Barkow, Criminal Law and its Processes: Cases and Materials, 2022, 11th Edition, Hardback, 9781543810776, Aspen Publishing
  • The use of electronic devices is not permitted during class.

5015-1 Legal Traditions and Systems [Lonegrass]
  • Melissa T. Lonegrass, Louisiana Civil Code with Official Legislative Commentary, 2022 Student Edition, 9781647088873, West Academic Publishing, (link)
    • Print & Digital - $58.00
    • eBook - $43.50, (link), ISBN: 9781647089313
    •  Note:  It is not necessary that you purchase the 2022 edition of the Civil Code. An older version of the Civil Code will suffice, as most of the law that we will study has not been revised recently. However, we will frequently refer to the Official Legislative Commentary to the Civil Code articles that we will study in this course. Not all versions of the Louisiana Civil Code contain Official Legislative Commentary. If your Civil Code does not contain Official Legislative Commentary, you will be expected to either access the Civil Code on Westlaw or Lexis or purchase a Civil Code that contains the required materials.  A recommended version of the Civil Code with commentary is Lonegrass, Louisiana Civil Code with Official Legislative Commentary: 2022 Student Edition.

5021-1&5 Legal Research and Writing [Barry]
  • Grammarly
  •  FREE version is all that is currently required

  • The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation, 2020, 21st, 9780578666150, Harvard Law Review Association
  • Neumann, Simon, & Painter-Thorne, Legal Writing, 2019, 4th, 978-1-5438-0519-2, Wolters Kluwer
  • Note: This textbook is used by two other legal writing faculty members who require additional add-on purchases to the textbook, namely online access, Connected Casebook, and Connected Quizzing.

BARRY Sections require ONLY the textbook.

If you purchase the textbook new from www.WKLegaledu.com it comes with the online access.  However, you may purchase the book used and have everything that you need for the Barry sections of legal writing.  Be on the lookout for notices from the SBA and other groups about how or where to purchase used copies of the textbook.  You may also rent the textbook on Amazon. Chegg seems to only have the 3rd edition.

These same purchases are required  for  Barry Legal Writing spring semester with no additional purchases needed

5021-7,9&11 Legal Research and Writing [Simino]

  • Online subscription purchase--wiil be explained in syllabus.

  • The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation, 2020, 21st, 9780578666150, Harvard Law Review Association
  • I highly recommend purchasing the 21st edition.  If desired or necessary, you may purchase the 20th edition, but doing so may make completing assigned citation exercises more difficult as some rules changed between the two editions and the reading assignments will be mapped to the 21st edition.

5021-2&8 Legal Research and Writing [Thompson]
  • Connected Quizzing for Legal Writing, Wolters Kluwer
  • Connected Quizzing for Legal Writing is NOT the same as Connected Casebook access for your textbook. You need BOTH for this course.  You have three options for purchasing Connected Quizzing--two options involve bundling Connected Quizzing with the purchase of the Connected Casebook version of the Legal Writing textbook; the third (and usually the most expensive) option involves purchasing Connected Quizzing separately from the textbook.

Once you purchase CQ, you need to enroll in the class by using "THOMPS169478" as the "class code."

Option 1: Print Book + CQ Bundle Option

Option 1 bundles Connected Quizzing with a new print textbook (which print book has Connected Casebook access) for a discounted price using ISBN 9781543814330. You may purchase this bundle by going to www.AspenPublishing.com.  Other retailers, including the LSU Bookstore, also offer this bundle; check with those retailers for their bundle price.  If your print book does NOT come with a Connected Quizzing access code, you did not purchase the appropriate bundled product, and you will be required to purchase Connected Quizzing separately.  (Option 3)

Option 2:  Connected eBook + CQ Bundle Option

Option 2 bundles Connected Quizzing with a digital-only version of the textbook (which eBook has Connected Casebook access) using ISBN 9781543830859.  You may purchase this digital bundle by going to www.AspenPublishing.com. Follow the instructions provided after completing the purchase to access the products. Check with other retailers to see if they also offer this bundle.

    Option 3:  CQ-Only Direct Purchase

Option 3 is for those purchasers who have already purchased their textbook elsewhere. If this includes you, purchase Connected Quizzing separately at www.AspenPublishing.com/CQ. Use ISBN 9781543814491.  You will not receive, nor will you need, an access code if you choose the CQ-Only Direct purchase; follow the instructions provided after completing your purchase to access Connected Quizzing on Casebook Connect.

  • Core Grammar for Lawyers
  • Core Grammar for Lawyers (CGL) is an online subscription.

To purchase your required 1-year CGL subscription, please use the following instructions:
    • Go to https://coregrammar.com/getcgl in your browser;
    • Complete the form and be sure to select “Louisiana” for your state and “Louisiana State University Law Center” for your school;
    • On the payment page, enter “LSULAW22” in the Access Code field. Your discounted price (of $32 for 1 year) will appear immediately. You have the option to purchase a longer subscription, if desired;
    • Enter your credit card information, verify the purchase, and continue to create and activate your CGL account, using 322-102-1663 as the “class code”; and
    • You will be able to start using CGL immediately. Do NOT “opt out” of the Pre-Test.

The completion deadlines for the CGL Pre-Test, Lessons, and Post-Test happen at various times during the fall semester. However, you are encouraged to knock out these CGL requirements this summer, before law school begins, lightening your load for the fall and allowing you to enter law school with a refresher on grammar and introduction to legal style.

Take your time with the Pre-Test--the better you perform on the Pre-Test, the more "lessons" you test out of, allowing you to earn more books without completing the lessons. You may still complete lessons that you test out of, if desired. You must earn books for all lessons (by testing out or by completing the lesson) before you are eligible to take the Post-Test.

WARNING: If the Administration has to change your PMH Law Center section assignment before classes begin, you could end up in a legal writing section that does not use CGL. If this happens, you should be eligible for a refund from CGL; email support@coregrammarfor lawyers.com to request the refund. Of course, even if you land in a legal writing section that does not require CGL, it won't hurt for you to keep the $32 subscription (but I recognize that you may want the money refunded).

  • The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation, 2020, 21st, 9780578666150, Harvard Law Review Association
  • You may purchase the print or online version of The Bluebook. Beware of counterfeit books being sold on some online marketplaces. If the price seems too good to be true, especially for a new book, it may be counterfeit.

  • Neumann, Simon, & Painter-Thorne, Legal Writing, 2019, 4th, Wolters Kluwer
  • You must purchase a format of the Legal Writing textbook that has Connected Casebook access. Connected Casebook access refers to a textbook with lifetime access to the online eBook, plus access to interactive study questions and other learning tools available on CasebookConnect.com.  Connected Casebook access DIFFERS from Connected Quizzing, which is also a required course material.  As noted under the Connected Quizzes entry, you have discounted purchase options that allow you to bundle your Connected Casebook textbook purchase with the Connected Quizzing purchase.  However, below are some of the textbook format options to choose from that include Connected Casebook access (but NOT Connected Quizzing access).

Option 1: Buy a new print Legal Writing textbook (ISBN 9781543805192) or loose-leaf textbook (ISBN 9781543812138) from www.AspenPublishing.com or any other retailer offering this book.  The access code inside your print or loose-leaf book will give you access to the online eBook and learning tools.  CAUTION: Buying a used book most likely means that the access code for the online resources has already been used and you will have to purchase access to the Connected Casebook online resources separately by purchasing a digital version of the book.  (Option 2)

Option 2:  Purchase digital-only access to your Connected Casebook (ISBN 9781543812169) from www.AspenPublishing.com and access the online e-book and Connected Casebook learning tools immediately.  CAUTION: Digital versions of the book (from retailers other than www.AspenPublishing.com) may NOT come with the needed access to the Connected Casebook online resources.

Instructions to purchase Core Grammar for Lawyers

    i.   Go to http://coregrammar.com/getcgl in your browser.

ii.  Complete the form and be sure to select "Louisiana" for your state and  "Louisiana State University Law Center" for your school.

iii.  On the payment page, enter LSULAW22 in the Access Code field. Your discounted price will appear immediately  I have been advised that the discounted price is approximately $32 but I am not able to give you a certain price as I have no control over the price.

iv.  Enter your credit card information, verify the purchase, and continue to create your Core Grammar for Lawyers account using the class code for Professor Krousel's class:  322-102-2244.  Activate your subscription.

    v.   You will be able to start using CGL immediately.  Do NOT opt of out of the pre-tests as this is a course requirement.

    • I recommend that you complete the complete the Core Grammar course requirments before school starts with the following caveat: the administration may move you to a section that does not require Core Grammar.  You may switch sections if your section assignment changes to a different professor who also requires Core Grammar.  Also, you may get a refund if your are switched to a section assignment in which the professor does not require Core Grammar.  To receive your refund, email support@coregrammarforlawyers.com.
    • The course requirements are: Before the end of the Fall semester, you must complete a Core Grammar pre-test and post-test, which contain 99 questions each.  To take a post-test, you must complete all lessons that you did not test out of in your pre-test. Thus, you must complete all lessons  before the end of the fall semester.  You must obtain at least an 80% on a Core Grammar post-test before the end of the spring semester. You may take the post-test as many times as you like.
    • I recommend that you take the pre-test as soon as possible. I require completion of pre-tests within the first two weeks of the semester.  Completing the pre-test will help you budget your time as you will know how many lesson(s) you tested out of and thus how many lessons you must complete before taking the post test.
    • To take the pre-test, go to the home page, select Bookshelf, and then pre-test.  Set aside at lease ninety minutes to take the pre-test.  If you would like to complete the Core Grammar requirements before schools starts, proceed to complete any lessons that you did not test out of in the pre-test.  Then, take a post-test until you receive at least an 80%.  Remember that you must use my class code (see highlight above) to get credit for this work.
