LSU Law Moves Up from 91st to 88th in U.S. News Rankings

"Onward and upward," remarked LSU Law Chancellor Jack Weiss when asked to comment on the 2009 U.S. News and World Report Rankings of Best Graduate Schools. Rankings released today placed the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center at number 88 and within the top 100 American Bar Association (ABA) law schools. The Center was tied at number 88 with six other schools, including Catholic University, DePaul, Northeastern, St. John's, University of Denver and University of Nevada-Las Vegas. Louisiana First Circuit Court of Appeal to Hold Oral Arguments

Chief Judge Burrell J. Carter of the Louisiana First Circuit Court of Appeal announced that the First Circuit will hold hearings in the David W. Robinson Courtroom, located on the second floor of the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center, on Thursday, March 20, 2008, beginning at 10 a.m., and Tuesday, March 25, 2008, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Attorneys representing clients with appeals pending before the First Circuit will be presenting oral arguments before the judges sitting in three-judge panels. General Counsel for Human Rights Watch Speaks at Law Center

Waterboarding is a euphemism for torture, according to Dihan PoKempner, General Counsel for Human Rights Watch. The Law Center’s International Law Society sponsored the symposium on Human Rights that featured several panelists on the topic of torture and the criminal justice system.

Christina Sautter Named Assistant Professor at LSU Law Center

LSU Law Center Chancellor Jack M. Weiss announced today the appointment of Christina M. Sautter as Assistant Professor Law, effective Fall 2008.Professor Sautter joined the Loyola University New Orleans College of Law faculty as a Westerfield Fellow in Fall 2006 and has taught Mergers and Acquisitions, Legal Writing and Research, and Moot Court Appellate Advocacy."Professor Sautter is a valuable addition to our faculty," said Chancellor Weiss. Robert Lancaster Named Director of LSU Law Clinical Legal Education Program

LSU Law Center Chancellor Jack M. Weiss announced today the appointment of Robert E. Lancaster as Director of the LSU Law Center's Clinical Legal Education Program and Professor of Professional Practice. Chancellor Weiss recommended the appointment at yesterday's meeting of the LSU Board of Supervisors in Shreveport. The appointment will be effective July 1, 2008, subject to Board approval. Lancaster currently is a Clinical Professor of Law at Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis. LSU Law to Offer Free Tax Assistance to Foreign Students and Teachers

This event has passed- 2008 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) The LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center offers a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program where volunteers provide free tax preparation services to foreign students, teachers, and researchers. Individuals who have F, J, Q, or M visas and their immediate family members (spouse and children under age 21) are eligible for assistance. The VITA Program has assisted more than 300 foreign students, teachers, and researchers at the university and in the Baton Rouge community in preparing federal and state income tax returns.
