2007-08 Moot Court Team Wins Regional Championship

The 2007-2008 LSU National Moot Court team of David Geerken (3L), Jonathan Forester (2L), and Jon Ringo (2L) brought home a regional championship following competition held November 17–18, 2007.  The LSU Law team, along with coach Laranda Moffett (’07), spent this past weekend competing in the regional round of the National Moot Court competition against teams from all of the law schools in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee.   For the second time in three years, the LSU Law team took first place in the regional competition. Pugh Institute for Justice Holds Seminar

 Serving to Learn; Learning to Serve Tari Devlon Williams of the University of Alabama Law School was the featured speaker at the November 2007 seminar coordinated by the Law Center’s Pugh Institute for Justice. Williams is the Director of Public Interest Law at the University. She discussed the law school’s recent expansion of public interest law programs and new efforts to recognize students for public service. A new ombudsman program with nursing homes for senior citizens, mediation work with veterans, and work with the Innocence Project are but a few of the new opportunities afforded students, said Williams. Moot Court and Trial Advocacy Competitions

LSU Law Center students recently participated in three Moot Court and Trial Advocacy Competitions.Highlights include: two First Place honors in individual and brief writing categories, and overall, two teams advancing into the semifinal and final rounds of their respective competitions.The International Criminal Moot Court Team advanced to the Final Round of the ICC Moot Competition for the third year in a row. LSU Law to Host Symposium on Presidential Power and Terrorism November 9

The LSU Law Center will offer a free symposium titled Presidential Power and Terrorism: Detention, Interrogation and Trial, with the center’s Professors John Baker, Ed Richards, and John Devlin presenting. The trio will discuss legal issues posed by detention, interrogation, and trial of terrorist suspects and how these challenge our common understanding of the rule of law.  The terrorist attack on the United States on September 11, 2001 has had profound consequences for the U.S. legal system.
