LSU Law to Provide Assistance for Students, Faculty and Staff Affected by Flood

Dear Friends –

As we finish our first day of classes, I wanted to update you on what we are doing for people who have not been able to make it to classes, discuss opportunities to help others and to get assistance, and invite you to lunch tomorrow (Thursday).  Let me begin with lunch.  Tomorrow, we will have pizza and water for all students, faculty, and staff in the student lounge from noon until 1:30 PM (or when food runs out).

One of the things we will talk about at lunch is how our community can help one another.  Many continue to need support and many are offering assistance.  The Law Center will soon have a link from its web page where students, faculty, and staff, by filling out a simple form, can identify what they need as well as how they can help.  In the meantime, if you need help or can offer help please email: Pam Hancock (phancock@lsu.edu), Jeff Brooks, (jeffbrooks@lsu.edu), Stephen Geist (sgeist1@lsu.edu), Ahmed Soussi (asoussi1@lsu.edu), Sara Richard (sara.richard19@yahoo.com), Patrick Geddes (pgeddes1@lau.edu), or me (tgalligan@lsu.edu).  Even after the web page is up, if you feel more comfortable doing so, email any of the above directly or talk to any faculty, staff, or student you trust to let us know. You can also use the LSU Law Center – Class of 2019 Facebook page, where students and faculty are offering assistance as well.

When you email or fill out the online form on the Law Center website, please be as specific as possible.  For instance, “I need or I can provide: socks, towels, food, transportation, a place to stay, soap, ripping out drywall, taking care of a pet, a casebook for a class, etc.”

Others have also reached out to us to help and one of those who has done so is our alumnus Judge Jay Zainey, who is the guiding force behind a group called SOLACE.  It is lawyers helping lawyers, and the group extends its services to law students, faculty, and staff as well.  SOLACE pairs those in need with those who can help.  So, in addition to all of the above, another resource for all our students, faculty, staff, and families is SOLACE.  To seek assistance or provide it through SOLACE contact Judge Zainey at Jay_Zainey@laed.uscoutrs.gov.

Stay tuned as pro bono opportunities for law students and faculty will begin to take shape in the days ahead.  The Public Interest Law Society will coordinate that effort.  And, watch for other resource-raising events for flood victims from SBA, BLSA, PILS, Cornerstones, the Tax Law Society and more.

Finally, on the academic front, as you read yesterday, we are doing a variety of things for those who cannot make it to class, including: note takers, recording class with faculty approval, and makeup classes.  Please let us know what other ideas you have on that front.  And be well.

All the best,

Tom
