Strong Showing for first Apprenticeship Week

More than 130 LSU Law 2Ls and 3Ls have submitted applications for the inaugural Apprenticeship Program, to be held on campus January 6 through 10, 2014.  LSU Law Chancellor Jack M. Weiss sent a message to students congratulating them on their willingness to devote their pre-semester vacation time to the innovative program.

“The large number of you who have signed up—and thereby indicated your willingness to devote your precious free time to a novel and challenging learning experience– is a genuine tribute to your initiative, maturity, and work ethic,” Weiss said in his message to students.

“I never doubted that LSU Law students would rise to the occasion, but now that the applications are a reality, I wanted to offer my sincere congratulations,” Weiss said.  “We are confident that each and every course has the potential to be an extraordinarily valuable—and enjoyable– learning experience, and that the week will offer a community experience that will be worthwhile in its own right.”

Professors John Church and Jeff Brooks, director and deputy director of Apprenticeship Week, will work diligently over the next few days to match students’ applications with the courses.

LSU Law Apprenticeship Week is an innovative and unique new program of practical legal education where master lawyers and judges will teach LSU Law upperclass students in small enrollment, hands-on mini-courses. Each mini-course will aim to provide students with focused, task-oriented training not generally available in law school courses and usually available only through actual practice experience.   Enrollment is limited to 12 students per class, with preference given to 3L students.  A limited number of slots are reserved for 2Ls.

LSU Law students will receive intensive practical training from participating lawyers and judges in the following courses:
