SOFTWARE

In addition to the Remote Access resources, many software packages such as Microsoft Office are available to students, faculty, and staff free of charge through University licensing arrangements. Most are available through TigerWare, the University's software distribution website. TigerWare downloads are accessed using a myLSU logon ID.

Among the many software packages available through TigerWare are Microsoft Office (2003, 2007, and 2008 for Mac), Windows OS upgrades (XP, Vista, Windows 7) and Corel Wordperfect X4.

Antivirus Software

The Law Center provides current faculty, staff, and students with Sophos Anti-Virus software for use on their personal laptop or home computer. You must use your Law Center logon ID and password to access this download. You must completely uninstall any existing antivirus software on your computer before proceeding. To install Sophos Anti-Virus on your Windows Vista/Windows 7 computer, download and run the program using the link below.

Network Drive Access Software

Students, faculty, and staff can access the Law Center file server securely and remotely using SFTP. The file server provides both group and private storage that is directly accessible from Law Center computers. Remote access requires an SFTP program—any will do, but we recommend WinSCP for Windows users and CyberDuck for Mac users. Both programs are free.

Windows Updates/Apple Software Updates

Both Windows and Mac computers need to keep current on operating system updates. To keep your Windows laptop protected from security threats, Windows Updates should be installed on a regular basis. This is done by running the Windows Update application in Windows Vista/Windows 7 and on Macs by running Apple Software Updates from the Apple menu in the upper left corner.

Online Backup Services

Every semester several students experience hard drive failures and sometimes lose all of their data including class notes, music, and pictures. In fact, all hard drives are going to fail at some point. It is just a matter of when. Something users should consider is an online backup services. These companies provide file backup services via a broadband Internet connection to their services. The Law Center does not officially endorse any online backup service. However, the big two are Carbonite.com and Mozy.com. Both have a small cost but work well since the backups are automatic once the software is installed to your computer. Both services are compatible with Windows and Mac. Backup and protect your data!
