LSU Law delivers unusual value. Tuition for the 2008-2009 school year is $11,722 for Louisiana residents and $21,818 for nonresidents, a considerable value when compared with private school tuitions or out-of-state fees at other public universities.

Did you know that your Law Chancellor’s Council membership counts toward your class giving effort (for you reunion-bound alumni) as well as to your firm’s participation level in the Annual Fund competition to “keep LSU Law in double digits?” Is your Chancellor's Council membership current? Patterson Plans a Higher Yield
Patterson knows a lot about giving back. Before the 1971 LSU Law graduate had been in practice 15 years, he’d already been elected six times to the Baton Rouge Bar Association’s Board of Directors, serving as president in 1984. In June of 2010, he will assume the Louisiana State Bar presidency. In between, and for the Law Center alone, he’s been a perennial volunteer with the Trial Advocacy program, held a seat on the Board of Trustees, and established (with Ed Walters) the two-semester Advanced Trial and Evidence class, a skills course that combines pretrial litigation and advanced litigation practice. He and Walters have been the sole instructors for more than 10 years. As LSU Law continues its ascent in national standing, Patterson sees a change in the classroom. “We’ve always had smart, creative students in this class.” But he’s noticed that the class as a whole becomes stronger each year. “Their potential is incrementally greater. And they are better prepared, frequently building on Trial Advocacy or Moot Court experience. Every class has a distinct personality and the students never cease to amaze me.” A founder and senior litigation partner in The Long Law Firm, Patterson was among 50 or so alumni who responded to Chancellor John Costonis’ 1999 call to form the Chancellor’s Council. By that time, the Law Center had a small endowment, and the State had committed to long-overdue capital improvements. But there were few resources available to bolster programs and pay for the enhancements necessary to make the LSU Law Center competitive on the national stage. Chancellor’s Council members pledge to do that – with unrestricted, annual contributions of $1000 or more. Those contributions have offset a number of expenses over the years, from scholarship aid to honoraria for speakers, to alumni receptions and hot meals for students during Hurricane Gustav. In the current year, when state budget cuts were compounded by the market’s devastation of the Law Center’s endowment pool, we’ve been able to keep the core mission intact thanks to unrestricted contributions by Chancellor’s Council members. The flexibility of these funds is key. It permits the Chancellor to respond to urgent and unanticipated needs or act timely when opportunity arises. The Chancellor’s Council has grown from that original 50 to more than 270 members. Patterson, who attained his LL.M. in Dispute Resolution from Pepperdine, wants to see two things happen. First, he wants to work with Annual Fund chair, Guy deLaup to see an increase in the percentage of alumni who give annually. “Chancellor’s Council is the Leadership giving level of the Annual Fund, so both Guy and I are working to encourage annual giving. Sixty percent of Pepperdine’s alumni make an annual gift,” he noted, “while last year – our best year ever by far – 11 percent of LSU Law alumni did.” “ LSU Law has given me – given us all the tools to do interesting, financially rewarding work – and for a very reasonable price. Why should we be any less willing [than Pepperdine Alumni] to step up and help LSU Law?” Patterson also wants to see a dramatic increase in the actual number of Chancellor’s Council members. “I’m grateful that we’ve got 30 more members than we had at the end of the calendar year. But I think there are many more than 273 of our 8500 living alumni who are in a position to make a yearly $1000 gift. We’ll be shaking the tree to find them.” Chancellor's Council ScholarsCurrently, three students, Leighann Guilbeau, Patrick Woolbert and Amanda Denise Stephens, are recipients of scholarship awards courtesy of the Chancellor's Council. In addition to scholarships, unrestricted contributions support Moot Court and Trial Advocacy endeavors, the new clinical legal education program, student recruitment and placement efforts, and overall enhancements to student life.
