"The curriculum offers a wide variety of subject matter. Not only is the variety good, but areas such as tax law and intellectual property have surprising depth due to the number of classes offered."
The LSU Law Center jumped 13 spots to #75 in the 2010 U.S. News and World Report rankings of law schools, among the largest jumps of all ABA-approved law schools. The #75 ranking is the highest in the LSU Law Center history.

Law Firms Closing Strong

Nearly 120 firms have participated in this year’s Annual Fund Drive, with many firms achieving 100% participation among their LSU Law grads. More are wrapping up their drives now.  "The interest and loyalty shown by our alumni has been impressive," says Guy deLaup, Annual Fund Chair.

There are  exciting activities taking place at the LSU Law Center these days. Our placement in the annual U.S. News & World Report law school rankings jumped dramatically this year, climbing from 88th to 75th in the closely watched list.

In addition, LSU Law has been ranked among the Best Value Law schools in the country, according to data recently released by The National Jurist Magazine. The September 2009 rankings put the LSU Law Center at #17, up from #22 in the previous rankings.

Most importantly, 90.9 percent of our students received passing scores on the latest bar exam. Our students are some of the best and brightest in the state. To achieve even more for our students, we need the engagement and financial support of our loyal alumni and friends. You can help us become even better by giving to LSU Law’s 2009-10 Annual Fund.

The most important reasons to give to the Annual Fund?  Your gift to the Annual Fund makes it possible for the Law Center to develop the next generation of leaders in the legal, business and public service arenas.  Unrestricted gifts to the Annual Fund support:

  • student financial aid
  • moot court and clinic activities
  • recruitment and placement efforts for both faculty and students
  • enhancements to student life at LSU Law

Giving is easy.  If your firm is participating in the drive, see the firm’s LSU Law representative.  Or, you may donate online at the LSU Foundation website, or mail a gift along with a donation form.   Please do not return credit card information via email.

Your gift in any amount to the Annual Fund is greatly appreciated and will help LSU Law reach its goal of maintaining double-digit alumni participation. A suggested giving guideline follows:

If you graduated:

Suggested Gift Amount:

One - two years ago

$50

Three – five years ago

$150

More than five years ago

$250

A leadership gift to the Annual Fund ($1,000 or more) qualifies you for membership in the Chancellor’s Council. Members are the Chancellor’s guests at an annual event and also receive individual recognition on the LSU Law website as well as at numerous student and alumni events throughout the year.

Guy deLaup Announces AF Campaign Team

"With the Law Center's recent accomplishments and increased ranking, I feel my LSU Law degree is worth more today than when I graduated in 1981," says Guy deLaup, incoming chair of the Annual Fund for 2009-10.

"LSU Law was also such a bargain when I was there. I'm happy to contribute financially to help insure the Law Center's future success and stature."

deLaup has begun his term by announcing the formation of a new Annual Fund campaign team in the state of Louisiana. The new structure includes the addition of a new vice-chair position, to which Darrel Papillion of Baton Rouge has been appointed.

deLaup, whose family law practice is based in Metairie, brings both his enthusiasm for his alma mater and his service experience to the position. Known across the state for his work as past president of the Louisiana State Bar Association, deLaup has also held a host of other leadership positions within the LSBA, the Louisiana Bar Foundation, the Jefferson Bar Association, and a number of pro-bono and community projects.

deLaup and Papillion are enthusiastic about the firm initiative and have enlisted fellow LSU Law graduates from across the state to help increase alumni participation in the annual giving. Other regions outside the state will be added soon. Serving as regional captains, these LSU Law alums are challenging firms to achieve 100 percent participation among their LSU Law grads:

Acadiana:                     Blake David (’01) & Frank Neuner (’76)

Baton Rouge:                Darrel Papillion (’94)

Central Louisiana:          Philip Hunter (’76)

Houma/Thibodaux:        Danny Lirette (’74)

Metairie:                       Guy deLaup (’81)

New Orleans:                Jan Hayden (’79) & Steve Resor (’85)

North Shore:                 Julian Rodrigue (’79)

Northeast Louisiana:      Tom Hayes (’77) & David Nelson (’81)

Northwest Louisiana:      Jerry Jones (’83)

Southwest Louisiana:     Winn Little (’74) & Emmett Sole (’68)

In comparison with peer law schools across the south, LSU Law has historically placed last in percentage of grads who give back to the school. Last year we achieved 11 percent participation, which was a huge increase for us (up from 5.2 percent the previous year).

“We encourage all LSU alums to join our effort to beat last year’s performance and achieve an even higher participation rate,” deLaup said.

This year we want to remain in double digits, but also demonstrate a respectable showing among our peers. One of these representatives may be recruiting your firm to help LSU Law achieve this goal.
