Far More Than a Common Law School

LSU Law is far more than a common law school. We like to say, “We’re a law school that’s On the Move.” The LSU Law Center is solidly positioned among the top 100 American law schools, and the 2017 U.S. News and World Report Best Graduate Schools rankings placed the Center at #82 nationally.

You ask, “What does the LSU Law Center offer that is different from other law schools?”

Our answer:

At LSU Law, you’ll receive a legal education that is demanding yet personal. It’s a place that offers guidance to help you chart your course, and an education that prepares you for practice or service in Louisiana or beyond our borders in the global workplace. And finally, LSU Law offers a great education at a great value. The tuition advantage that we enjoy over private university peers has become even more dramatic over the past decade.

In terms of Curriculum, you’ll receive preparation in the common law—similar to that provided in other American law schools. But, at LSU Law, you’ll also have the option of receiving an additional degree that recognizes your preparation in the civil law—a blend of Roman, Spanish, and French legal traditions.

The 42 full-time faculty members afford a student-faculty ratio of 16.4, with lots of personal attention. More than two dozen distinguished global faculty have taught courses in the International Program since its inception in 1998.

The Center’s proud tradition of public service, scholarship, and excellence in teaching dates to its founding in 1906. A vastly expanded Clinical Legal Education Program, field placements with local and state government, service organizations, and the judiciary, together with strong Moot Court and Trial Advocacy programs, offer Practical Experience, allowing you to hone skills and obtain real-life experience. A new Apprenticeship Week program is offered for rising 2nd and 3rd year students each January.  The free program provides a series of hands-on mini courses taught by practicing lawyers and judges.

As the state’s premier public law school, more than 10,000 of our graduates have served in the legal community, government, military, judiciary, and business community, among others. You’ll find our Alumni in practically every state in the nation, and in many foreign countries.

The LSU Law Center’s specialized Centers and Institutes focus on continuing education for the state’s judges, assisting the Louisiana Legislature via the Louisiana Law Institute, issues of justice, developments in mineral law, and civil law initiatives.

Of course, there is also the added benefit of being located in the heart of the LSU campus and tiger country, here in the capital city of Baton Rouge—home of the Louisiana Legislature, state government, and numerous federal offices.

In April 2015, the LSU Law Center realigned with LSU A&M to afford greater opportunities for collaboration and synergy among our programs, faculty, staff and students.
